This limited edition of collector postcards are hot
collector items. Each postcard depicts scenes from Silicon Valley done by the CADartists'
kids. |
These postcards were done by disabled kids. Arent they GREAT!!
Their physical and learning handicaps virtual made it impossible to create even a simple birthday card to Mom or Dad saying, "I love you." Many cynics said computer art by disabled kids couldnt be done, but here is the proof that it can be done .
This art makes people smile. Not because it is funny or humorous, but for the same reason you smile back at a baby... there is no guile, ulterior motives or hidden agenda.
Give the average person a gift horse and they immediately check the teeth. Give these kids a gift horse and it becomes a perfect golden charger, a black beauty or a white stallion ready to take them anywhere. Viewing their art allow the viewer to throw off the cloak of cynicism that shrouds so much of todays thinking and see with the naiveté and childlike wonder these special kids are blessed with.
Part of the CADartists "learning process" is field trips to places like NASA and Stanford. In the January CADartists class the question was posed to the kids, "What do you want to draw?" The kids came back with, "Winchester Mystery House", "Great America" , "Jack-in-the -Box", "Space Ship".
Off in a bus they went. I was quite a sight.... a group of artists facing a series of challenges including autism, Downs syndrome and multiple sclerosis... Wherever they went they drew a crowd. The kids sketched and sketched and sketched. Back in the class they would refer to their sketches as they individually drew and painted their freehand art with a mouse, directly onto the computer." .... Hey, these look really good.... wouldnt they make nice postcards?

"Any profits received from the sale of the postcards will be used to obtain more equipment," said Tom Bakey, founder of CADartists. "This is psychic income for me. Id like to raise more money so more students can participate," said Tom, who makes no income from CADartists.
The class landmark-sketching mission is far from over. Still on the list for visits are San Jose International Airport, De Anza College Flint Center for the Performing Arts, the Winchester Mystery House, and the Santa Clara Mission for starters. "The Silicon Valley will keep us busy for a while. If we run out here there is always San Francisco next," said Tom.
The kids art hangs in private homes and plenty of commercial establishments - from Charles Schwab to Jack-in-the-Box retaurtants where the classs art if featured on tray liners.
